Melissa May is a painter whose work is inspired by music, poetry and the natural environment. She writes, “I look for connections between ideas and am interested in the human experience and spirituality. I hope my work conveys the beauty and the energy of the living world.” Using images that are universal without being too specific or literal, the viewer is enabled to find personal connections to the art. Through abstraction the artist is able to focus on the pure pleasure of color, pattern, texture and the process of painting. Others have described the work as, “organic, transformative, atavistic, manifesting female divinity, and evocative of the primal.”
Melissa has lived in Germany, Turkey, Ohio, New York City, New Mexico, Florida and West Virginia and has been strongly influenced by each place which is reflected in her work. She has exhibited over the past forty years across the United States and as far away as Australia and is included in numerous private collections. Melissa earned a Masters of Arts in Anthropology from Eastern New Mexico University, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 2001. She also earned a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Art History, Museum Studies in 1995 and a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Painting in 1982 from the Art Academy of Cincinnati.
